MID-CENTURY DESIGN CELEBRATES ICONIC ARTISTS... ETTA JAMES

MID-CENTURY DESIGN CELEBRATES ICONIC ARTISTS… ETTA JAMES

DelightFULL’s pieces were thought to celebrate the lives and works of iconic personalities that left their mark on the 20th century. Different and inspiring people like Frank Sinatra, Neil Armstrong and even Michael Jackson himself are only a few of the names that ended up inspiring lighting designs that will certainly outlast time. So for the next months, from January until December, here at Unique Blog we are going to celebrate mid-century design in a very special way… we’re celebrating with friends, with people, with DelightFULL’s inspirations.

So, we’re starting things off in a very classy way. For this month’s edition, we’re celebrating with the timeless queen of soul, blues, and jazz… Mz. Etta James.

Etta James, whose assertive, beautiful voice lit up timeless hits such as “At Last” and “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” would have been 79 today.

Born in Los Angeles California, Etta James was early a gospel prodigy. Through her lifetime, she performed in various genres, but soul and jazz stood out, making her one of the most critically acclaimed and influential female singers of the past 50 years.

From her first R&B hit, in 1955, the risqué Roll With Me Henry – recorded when she was only 15 – through a series of classic 1960s soul sides (At Last, Tell Mama or I’d Rather Go Blind), then a series of critically acclaimed 1970s and 1980s albums that won her a broad rock audience, James proved capable of developing and changing as an artist.

James released her latest studio album, The Dreamer, in November 2011, which received really warm reviews. A few weeks later, James’s doctor announced that the singer was terminally ill.

Legendary producer Jerry Wexler once called her “the greatest of all modern blues singers”. The jazz diva died in California, on January 20, 2012, at the age of 73.

“My mother always told me, even if a song has been done a thousand times, you can still bring something of your own to it. I’d like to think I did that.”
Etta James

Inspired by the soul legend Miss Peaches, DelightFULL created “Etta Wall”, “Etta Suspension”, “Etta Round” and “Etta Chandelier”.
