Nina Simone
The iconic Nina Simone, who still sweep us away with her great hits Feeling Good and I Put a Spell on You, would have been 84 today.
Born in North Carolina in the early 30s, legendary Nina Simone sang a mix of jazz, blues and folk music. By the mid-1960s, she became known as the voice of the Civil Rights Movement, reflecting these times in everlasting and epic tunes like Mississippi Goddam, Young, Gifted and Black, Four Women, amongst many others.
Nina Simone studied classical piano at the Juilliard School in New York City, but left early when she ran out of money. Performing in night clubs, she turned her interest to jazz, blues and folk music and released her first album in 1957, scoring a Top 20 hit with the track I Loves You Porgy.
When her autobiography was published, Nina Simone wrote that her function as an artist is “…to make people feel on a deep level. It’s difficult to describe because it’s not something you can analyze; to get near what it’s about you have to play it. And when you’ve caught it, when you’ve got the audience hooked, you always know because it’s like electricity hanging in the air.” It is this power and fierceness that have been inspiring many people throughout the years, including DelightFULL. Nina Simone was an inspiring leader that rose in times of need with elegance and determination, much like DelightFULL’s lighting designs.
“You can’t help it. An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times.”
Nina Simone
Inspired by the High Priestess of Soul, DelightFULL created “Simone Floor”, “Simone Suspension”, and “Simone Wall”. Don’t forget that these pieces will be with a 50% discount until the 24th!
Like Nina Simone’s genius capacity to mesmerize us with her music, Delightfull took a design classic and reinterpreted it into a fresh lighting fixture with a strong attention to detail.
Much like Mz. Simone, DelightFULL’s designs are strong statement pieces, that cannot go unnoticed wherever they’re placed. The Simone design family aims to pass on her powerful personality, as well as her bold and warrior features.
While she may be gone, Simone left a lasting impression on the world of music, art and activism.
“What kept me sane was knowing that things would change, and it was a question of keeping myself together until they did.”
