Founders of Ding Dong Studio, Michael Miranda and Davide Gomes, were hired by the new owner of a 1930s Porto town house to almost entirely gut the three-story home and restore it to its former glory but with a 21st-century twist. Let\u2019s take a look at this\u00a01930s Porto town house<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0with an eclectic refresh and get inspired!<\/p>\n

\"A<\/a><\/p>\n

The design duo<\/strong> maintained the original Nordic pine floors and staircase but knocked down multiple walls to eliminate a series of cramped rooms and create a modern layout. They also relocated the kitchen<\/strong><\/a> to the front in order to connect the living, dining, and patio spaces<\/strong><\/a> for a generous entertaining zone<\/strong><\/a> in the back.<\/p>\n

For the\u00a0interiors<\/em><\/strong>,<\/a> the team blended influences from multiple eras to honor the building\u2019s past while bringing it into the present day. They juxtaposed traditional details like coffered ceilings and wainscoting with sleek lines and geometric figures. \u201cWe love historical design and contemporary art at the same time,\u201d Michael says. \u201cWe like to make this cocktail of new and old. It\u2019s a balance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upon entering, guests encounter a striking purple tapestry, a playful\u00a0custom console<\/strong>, and warm oak paneling. The pale wood walls carry through a narrow teal archway into a\u00a0living room<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, with\u00a0cozy furniture\u00a0<\/strong>like a sink-right-in\u00a0Meridiani\u00a0sofa, a sculptural seat by\u00a0Vincenzo De Cotiis, and a coral leather chair.<\/p>\n

Mirrored framing leads to the dining section, where checkerboard cement tiles act like a rug beneath the yellow metal table,\u00a01943 Jens Risom chairs, and blown-glass Paola Navone pendant. \u201cIt\u2019s very similar to the floors in the service areas of this kind of house,\u201d Michael explains of the tile. \u201cSo we used it like a carpet in one of the most important parts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lush garden is an extension of the house.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Beyond glass sliding doors, a verdant courtyard is a rare slice of nature in the city. A leafy loquat shades the clinker brick pavers, while ivy climbs up the granite walls. \u201cYou have this cocoon feeling, and it\u2019s very, very private,\u201d Michael says. \u201cWe have a small tank that keeps water running. It\u2019s relaxing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though this three-part, open-concept setup is primed for socializing, the\u00a0compact mint green kitchen<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is also outfitted with a breakfast nook for hosting. Friends can hang out on the\u00a0built-in bench<\/strong>, which is upholstered in aqua leather and tropical\u00a0Leli\u00e8vre\u00a0fabric, while the homeowner cooks with the Smeg oven. Leopard motif wallpaper, fluted glass cabinets, and bronze hardware complete the look.<\/p>\n

A groovy eggplant-colored stairwell features a neon stripe as it moves upwards to the primary bedroom, where blue, orange, and beige tones mingle for a soothing result. The ensuite is equally tranquil, with a travertine sink, trapezoid-shaped tiles, and a spa-style shower. It\u2019s a Portuguese oasis in every way.<\/p>\n
