We\u2019ve been seeing\u00a0designers<\/strong>\u00a0play with\u00a0recycled or repurposed materials for some time now. Designer\u00a0Sandra Benhamou\u2019s Paris Design Week installation at Galerie Vauclair, for example, showcased a\u00a0custom chandelier<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0constructed from vintage Murano glass pieces from the\u00a0Veronese\u00a0archives, presiding over her new sofa and cocktail table designs<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other end of the spectrum,\u00a0India Mahdavi\u2019s satellite exhibition, Greetings from Greece<\/em>, presented in collaboration with Athens-based\u00a0Carwan Gallery, was revelatory in its mundanity. The young designer\u00a0Savvas Laz\u00a0stood out for his Trashformers series, in which he transforms styrofoam from discarded consumer electronics packaging with fiberglass and\u00a0pop-y hues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Pattern was pronounced at Paris Design Week this year, and\u00a0designers<\/strong>\u2019 maximalist installations spurred the emotions as much as the imagination. Design darling\u00a0Laura Gonzalez showcased an epic conflation of prints at her eponymous gallery, layering signature Schumacher fabrics in luxe expanses. The fabric house\u2019s newly opened showroom, a few blocks away, was equally dizzying in the best way possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bold strokes still abound in Paris and on the fair floor at Maison & Objet, but we saw a material exploration of softness from\u00a0designers<\/strong>\u00a0this year that felt like a prelude to something much bigger. At the Espace Commines presentation, design duo\u00a0Sabourin Costes\u00a0presented a beautiful resin and glass cocktail table alongside\u00a0tubular stools<\/strong>\u00a0and a tendril-y vase inspired by sea anemones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seating was equally soft this year, in profile as much as fabric composition. Pieces embraced curvature, like\u00a0Bina Baitel\u2019s\u00a0sloped sofa<\/strong>\u00a0or the blue velvet t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate installed at Designer of the Year\u00a0Cristina Celestino\u2019s \u201cPalais Exotique\u201d restaurant concept for Mariage Fr\u00e8res. In keeping with the theme, the\u00a0Invisible Collection\u00a0presented the architect and\u00a0designer<\/strong>\u00a0Aline Asmar d\u2019Amman\u2019s debut furniture collection, featuring a \u201csensual\u201d conversation salon upholstered in pink mohair.<\/p>\n

Aluminum, chrome, and stainless steel dominated the showrooms, from\u00a0products<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>like\u00a0Thibault Huguet\u2019s understated Lampe #1, available in customized heights, to\u00a0Wendy Andreu\u2019s compact Staple Console and\u00a0Charlotte Juillard\u2019s chrome ISO sconce.<\/p>\n
