He played opposite Judy Holliday (<i>The Marrying Kind<\/i>) and Rita Hayworth (<i>Miss Sadie Thompson<\/i>) and his presence was always felt. In another remarkable achievement, he\u2019s been married eight times. More recently, he stayed relevant with parts in <i>From Dusk Till Dawn<\/i> and<i>Inglorious Basterds<\/i>. He did an occasional quality film, but generally nothing too distinguished (T<i>opper Returns<\/i>, <i>Dishonored Lady<\/i>). But who cares? He did three extremely memorable films (<i>Imitation of Life<\/i>, <i>Psycho<\/i>, and <i>Thoroughly Modern Millie<\/i>) and he\u2019s also remembered for almost getting to be James Bond and for definitely being the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico from 1981-86. Accept no imitation of Gavin. The guy didn\u2019t make it as a Hollywood star, but he did make it as a real-life romancer, having been linked with Romy Schneider, Nico, and other lucky people. Tarantino re-anointed him by putting him in<i> Kill Bill <\/i>films and <i>Django Unchained<\/i>. But he then wrote the book <i>The Othe<\/i>r and he also came out of the closet, making it big as a novelist\/gay. He was cool all right.
