To step inside the Casa de Vidro in S\u00e3o Paulo, an aquarium-like box on stilts designed by Lina Bo Bardi in 1951, is to experience the designer\u2019s eclectic aesthetic firsthand and see the couple\u2019s Brazilian folk-art collection, still on view. American architect Philip Johnson, who built his Glass House in New Canaan, Conn., in 1949, aptly summed up the singular charm of living in a transparent box: \u201cIt\u2019s the only house in the world where you can see the sunset and the moonrise at the same time, standing in the same place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These five architectural classics balance the sleek simplicity of midcentury furniture and that clutter-less comfort we all crave\u2014in short, houses worth touring for what\u2019s on the inside as much as for their more-renowned exteriors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/si.wsj.net\/public\/resources\/images\/BN-IT238_0604MO_P_20150604091259.jpg\" alt=\"Villa E-1027\u2019s Get the look: 5 mid century modern interiors\" width=\"670\" height=\"447\"><br>\nWedged between a pine-shaded path and the rocky French Riviera coast, Eileen Gray\u2019s simple white home is a reclusive beauty. It had a word-of-mouth open-door policy from the start. \u201cMy parents welcomed anyone who was interested,\u201c said Shari Gronwald, the Stahls\u2019 daughter. \u201cOur house was like a revolving door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>OFF-THE-BEATEN-SCANDINAVIAN-PATH | Villa Mairea, Noormarkku, Finland<br>\nVilla Mairea\u2019s undivided, 820-foot-long living space was inspired by the traditional Finnish peasant house, with slender vertical poles that evoke the outdoor landscape. Since 2000, it has been open to the public for seasonal art exhibitions.
