Nendo<\/em> Studio was at Salone del Mobile<\/strong><\/em> 2016 with 50 incredible manga chairs that he created for Friedman Benda<\/em>. CovetED Magazine had the pleasure to talk with Oki Sato, founder of the brand, about\u00a0the creation of that collection.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Nendo\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Manga comics are deeply rooted in Japanese culture, since they can be traced back to Ukiyoe prints developed during the Edo period (1603-1868 A.D.).This installation of 50 manga chairs is the result of adapting the strong symbolic nature of manga comics to furniture design<\/em>. Manga consists of a series of frames on a single sheet of paper that creates a sequence.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Nendo<\/p>\n

Similarly, 50 standard chairs<\/em> are lined up in a grid, each one conjures up a sense of story, and each with a design element from manga. For example, a \u201cspeech bubble\u201d or \u201ceffect line\u201d are added to visualize sound or action. Or emotional symbols from manga, like \u201csweat\u201d or \u201ctears\u201d, are formed so that a sense of story and character can be felt.<\/p>\n

\"Nendo<\/p>\n

With the abstraction of manga comics in mind, physical aspects such as colour and texture are intentionally avoided as much as possible. Instead, a complete mirror finish<\/em> is opted for, which generates new spatial layers as the mirror surface reflects the real world, just like manga does.<\/p>\n

Coveted Magazine<\/a> visited the Facolt\u00e0 Teologica dell\u2019Italia Settentrionale that displayed Manga Chairs collection during Milan Design Week<\/em>.<\/p>\n
