The\u00a0DUS Architects used sustainable\u00a0bio-plastic to make the\u00a03D Print Urban Cabin, which is intended to show how additive manufacturing can offer solutions for\u00a0temporary housing or disaster relief.\u00a0And, when the cabin is no longer needed, it can be\u00a0destroyed and almost all the\u00a0materials can be reused.<\/p>\n

\u201c3D printing techniques can be used particularly well for small temporary dwellings or in disaster areas,\u201d they said.
\n\u201cAfter use, the bio print material can be shredded entirely and re-printed into new designs.\u201d<\/p>\n

This Amsterdam-based\u00a0architecture studio is now\u00a0in the final stages of\u00a0a project to build\u00a0a full-size 3D-printed canal house. This small project offers an insight into what that structure will look like.<\/p>\n

Placed in a former industrial area, the tiny gabled cabin\u00a0contains just 25 cubic metres of area \u2013 far\u00a0less than the average micro home. All of these surfaces are black, thanks to the\u00a0bio-based\u00a03D-printing filament \u2013 a product with linseed oil as its main\u00a0component, which the architects have been developing with\u00a0major consumer manufacturing company\u00a0Henkel.<\/p>\n

This technique\u00a0uses fused deposition modelling, the same form of additive manufacturing used by most household 3D printers.
