The mordenist ruin created by the British artist Alex Hartley, was installed in the gardens of London\u2019s\u00a0Victoria Miro Gallery.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0Named as A Gentle Collapsing II, <\/em>this projects was design to resemble\u00a0an abandoned and decaying modernist building. The installation was\u00a0specifically designed for the gallery\u2019s canal-side garden and intended to present \u201ca situation of ambiguous cause and uncertain outcome\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe work offers poignant reflection on themes of entropy and decay,\u201d said Victoria Miro gallery. \u201cIt is, in some ways, emblematic of a wider collapsing \u2013 of ideals or even spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRunning contrary to such thoughts, however, is the undeniable aesthetic pleasure we find in ruins \u2013 their compelling, transportative quality\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this sense, A Gentle Collapsing II becomes a kind of time machine that frees the mind to wander, gently collapsing or dislocating a sense of linear time as it does so.\u201d \u201cThe projects is part of\u00a0 Hartley\u2019s After You Left exhibition, and it\u2019s sinking\u00a0into the waters of the Wenlock Basin, a part of Regent\u2019s canal that reaches behind Victoria Miro gallery.<\/p>\n

Internal walls are exposed to the elements, with plaster fallen away to reveal brickwork. The remains of a staircase are open to the sky, and windows are missing their panes.<\/p>\n

Inside the gallery, further architectural fragments \u2013 which appear to have been rescued from the installation \u2013 are displayed alongside a set of blurry black and white photographs of modernist buildings taken by Hartley in California.<\/p>\n
