For the fifth year in a row, designer Derek McLane<\/strong> took it upon himself to design the stage where everything is possible and where dreams come true: the Oscars 2017<\/strong><\/em> stage! For this year the designer\u2019s biggest inspirations were the glorious mid-century days when Art Deco was born.<\/p>\n

The biggest and most glamorous night of the year is almost here. In fact, it\u2019s just a couple of days away. So everything is almost set and ready to shine.\u00a0And everyone can\u2019t wait to see the dreamy dresses and applaud when the winners come up on stage. However, none of that would be the same if the\u00a0stage<\/em> itself wasn\u2019t the masterpiece it deserves to be. Last year\u2019s inspiration was \u201cWe all dream in gold\u201d<\/em> and the stage looked just gorgeous. Let\u2019s see what the designer prepared for this magical edition\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Find<\/p>\n

For this year\u2019s stage, \u201cour inspiration is Art Deco and Hollywood Regency<\/strong>,\u201d says McLane. \u201cThere are new producers this year\u2014Mike De Luca and Jennifer Todd\u2014and those were the first words out of their mouths when they hired me\u201d.\u00a0To truly embrace the concept, the team studied iconic Art Deco buildings, but they also took a look at movie sets from the 1930s\u2014in particular, the work of Irish production designer Cedric Gibbons<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere the crystals are and aren\u2019t determines the shape of the statuette,\u201d says McLane. \u201cWe used about 150,000 crystals in the strands.\u201d Swarovski is no stranger to the Oscars stage\u2014more than one million crystals have been used in the ceremony over the last ten years. \u201cSwarovski has a long history in cinema, going back to the early days of Hollywood,\u201d says Nadja Swarovski. \u201cDerek\u2019s showstopping decor and cascading crystal curtains never fail to amaze the audience and add impact to this special event.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Find<\/p>\n

McLane nicknamed this design \u201cthe moon portal,\u201d and it\u2019s not hard to see why. \u201cIt very closely mirrors something Cedric Gibbons designed for a movie,\u201d McLane says. \u201cIt has a slightly Eastern feeling to it, and yet it has some Deco flourishes at the same time. And maybe a little Art Nouveau in the swirling curves of this piece.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Find<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is also very much inspired by a couple of different movie musicals from the \u201930s, where they made these fantastical cityscapes that look like Deco buildings, but they also look somewhat unreal,\u201d says McLane.<\/p>\n
