He was a man with big ideas!<\/h4>\n

Between\u00a0painting, sculpture, film and performance, the\u00a0Latham\u2019s work focus on a theory\u00a0he called Flat Time. Basically, it describes the universe in time-based rather than spatial terms.<\/p>\n

He was a believer!<\/h4>\n

Latham always believed in art and that\u00a0artists have just as important a role in society as scientists, philosophers, and the rest. Gather with his wife, they\u00a0set up the Artists Placement Group with the end of\u00a0find artists jobs in government offices.<\/p>\n

He was an influencer!<\/h4>\n

It\u2019s a sad fact that many incredible artists are eclipsed by those they tutored and mentored \u2013 and Latham was one of them. But in acknowledgment of this, the Serpentine has programmed a group show in its Sackler space of four artists who have been influenced by Latham. Look out for ping-pong tables, spray tan and presidential candidacies.<\/p>\n

He was a\u00a0radical British artist!<\/h4>\n

In a year when it\u2019s tempting to assume that radical British art mainly involves paintings of the Yorkshire Dales, here\u2019s something weird, tough and uncompromising. When you leave the gallery you may feel\u00a0bewildered and frustrated. But in the end it will worth it!<\/p>\n

He was a trouble maker!<\/h4>\n

Latham clearly took pleasure in sticking two fingers up to the establishment. Books, with all their claims of infallibility, rarely came out well. As a tutor at St Martins in the \u201960s, he chewed up an academic book as an \u2018art action\u2019, and returned its pulped remains in a phial.<\/p>\n
