The New Scotland Yard<\/strong><\/em>, the headquarters of\u00a0London\u2019s Metropolitan Police Service was designed by the British\u00a0firm\u00a0\u00a0Allford Hall Monaghan Morris,\u00a0remodeling a 1930s block overlooking the River Thames.<\/p>\n

The neoclassical block is now\u00a0fronted by a squat oblong entrance pavilion\u00a0and capped by a bronzed roof extension and\u00a0has also undergone a significant interior reorganization by\u00a0Stirling Prize-winning practice AHMM.<\/p>\n

The building that faces the Thames from the\u00a0Victoria Embankment\u00a0is now officially known as\u00a0New Scotland Yard. \u201cOur New Scotland Yard preserves and showcases elements unique to the heritage of the Metropolitan Police whilst creating a robust headquarters building, fit for the 21st century in the heart of Westminster,\u201d said AHMM director Paul Monaghan.<\/p>\n

The pavilion is raised on a pale stone plinth that visually marries the addition with the Portland stone walls\u00a0of the original building.\u00a0Its curving glass walls are intended to convey a message of organizational transparency and create a \u201cnon-institutional\u201d entrance.<\/p>\n

\"new<\/a><\/p>\n

The pavilion is also a memorial for officers who died in the line of duty, with an eternal flame and contemplation pool visible through the glazing.\u00a0Lifts rise through a glazed void in the centre of the building to the roof pavilion and illuminated terraces on the eighth floor.<\/p>\n

Alongside the entrance and rooftop pavilions, modest Portland stone extensions help to increase the building\u2019s original floor area from 8,700 square metres to 12,000 square metres.\u00a0Accents of colour are added through the peach- and bronze-toned louvres that cover the rear facade and the\u00a0tiled splashbacks\u00a0in the toilets.<\/p>\n
