We have the answer: in the myth about Nian, firecrackers are supposed to scare off monsters and bad luck. So, people stay up on Chinese New Year\u2019s Eve<\/strong><\/a> and set off firecrackers at midnight and in the morning as well. This time with the purpose of bringing good luck and welcoming the new year.<\/p>\n

    3. It\u2019s the longest holiday in China.<\/h3>\n

    While technically the Spring Festival is 15 days celebrations start on New Year\u2019s Eve<\/strong><\/a> making it 16 days.\u00a0You can also say that the holiday season starts in (lunar) December with the Laba Festival\u00a0(\u814a\u516b\u8282\u2014l\u00e0 b\u0101 ji\u00e9). That\u2019s around 40 days of celebrations! One of the curious facts about this holiday and what makes it so special is that you are supposed to spend time with your family and can only go out on the 5th day!<\/p>\n

The day prior to the New Year it\u2019s an absolute must!<\/p>\n

    This is a great reason to have seconds don\u2019t you think? While a lot of cultures have special foods this isn\u2019t the one to step out. For example, Nian Gao is a type of rice cake.
