It is a haven where quality and design reign supreme and it celebrates the very best of creativity and craftsmanship from the 20th century. Broadly speaking, the Gallery stocks interesting items made from 1900 to 1950, ranging from Cartier and Dunhill \u201csmoker\u2019s requisites\u201d to pre- and postwar automobile artworks (framed photos reprinted from original negatives, from \u00a3200; motor-racing and travel posters, from \u00a31,800), leather furnishings (from \u00a32,000), aviation models (from \u00a3800), Patek Philippe dress-pocket watches converted for wrist use with gold cases (from \u00a39,500) and unique objects designed to appeal to the more raffish type of gent with an eye on the past. Whatever comes through the door, insists owner Richard Gauntlett, \u201csimply has to be of the best quality, wonderful to look at and historically interesting\u201d \u2013 a perfect description of the Persol sunglasses that originally belonged to Steve McQueen (\u00a335,000).<\/p>\n

Gauntlett\u2019s late father, Victor, founded Pace Petroleum and was hailed a \u201csaviour\u201d of Aston Martin after buying a substantial stake in the marque in 1980. Gauntlett Jr believes he inherited his father\u2019s love of the golden age of luxury. \u201cI remember his Vuitton trunk, a fabulous Prohibition-era Asprey cocktail cabinet disguised as a safe, and modern life\u00a0posters.\u201d<\/p>\n

While at school near Edinburgh, Gauntlett Jr trawled junk shops and markets for model cars to send to a dealer in Kent who\u2019d send him payment by post. A spell as a design specialist with Bonhams\u2019 car department followed before he was unexpectedly commissioned to \u201cinterior design<\/strong><\/em>\u201d a Gloucestershire house, right down to the cutlery. \u201cIt made me focus on how much I love really good-quality design things and inspired me to set up a shop for like-minded people. My aim is to sell objects from \u00a3250 to \u00a355,000 that no one will walk past without stopping to admire,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Those who \u201cget\u201d the Gallery <\/a>might be asked downstairs, where a gentlemen\u2019s-club atmosphere prevails and where the likes of Arki Busson and Sir Anthony Bamford have recently chewed the cud about subjects such as Churchill and Malcolm Campbell\u2019s Bluebird. Most people who settle into one of the sofas leave hours later \u2013 often after purchasing a deliciously frivolous object they didn\u2019t realise they needed. Which reminds me, I must go and collect that giant-sized model of a gent\u2019s brogue (\u00a38,500). Four-feet long and exquisitely cobbled, it\u2019s a must for the boot-room wall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
