Ibiza Getaway:“Parents and kids can exist in their own spaces and on their own schedules.”
In the realm of design, the term “fun house” often conjures images of whimsical theme parks or flashy McMansions geared towards viral TikTok content. Yet, in a refreshing departure from the norm, Mafalda Muñoz and Gonzalo Machado, the dynamic duo behind Madrid’s Casa Muñoz interior design studio, were tasked with a different challenge altogether. Their mission? To transform a four-story townhouse nestled in Ibiza’s historic port into a haven of stylish socializing fit for a modern family. It was a rare commission, one that demanded a delicate balance between chic aesthetics and functional comfort, marking a departure from traditional design paradigms.

Nestled on the picturesque Balearic island of Ibiza, a Spanish-English couple, accompanied by their teenage children, sought to redefine their summer retreat experience with a centrally located pied-à-terre. Despite owning a larger seaside residence on the island for nearly two decades, the family craved a shift in ambiance—a chic bolt-hole where their teenagers could congregate with friends after late-night escapades, all without the logistical hassle of driving. This smaller, yet meticulously designed abode promised peace of mind for the parents while offering a convenient spot for sunny weekend getaways during the off-season, eliminating the usual burdens associated with opening up a larger property.

Lava stone tiles cover the floor and countertops in the fourth-floor kitchen. The bench cushions are in a Dedar fabric, the vintage Pastrana chairs are by José Luis Picardo for Darro, and the artwork is by Grillo Demo.
Adding to its allure, this remarkable residence is situated on hallowed ground, occupying the historic space of the iconic shop Paula’s Ibiza. Renowned as the birthplace of Ibiçencan hippie-chic style during the 1970s, this locale continues to inspire contemporary fashion, including the annual line of beachy accessories crafted by renowned designer Jonathan Anderson for the esteemed Spanish luxury brand Loewe. When the owners stumbled upon the property, it had already undergone significant demolition and reconstruction. “It had already been ripped apart and was being rebuilt,” recalls Muñoz. Undeterred, they initiated a transformative overhaul, executing a complete 180-degree change to the layout. Every detail was meticulously reimagined, from the reconstruction of the staircase to ensure seamless flow throughout the home, to the meticulous redesign that aligned with their visionary concept.

In a bold display of creativity and adaptability, Casa Muñoz has pushed the boundaries of freedom in design. With the clients’ intention to host an abundance of family and friends within the space, their primary directive was clear: maximize the number of beds available. Beyond this essential requirement, the designers were granted complete autonomy to execute their vision. Having previously collaborated with Casa Muñoz on their Madrid apartment, the clients harbored full confidence in their capabilities. As a result, the second floor of the residence boasts not only two bedrooms but a staggering eight beds, ingeniously integrated into a navy-style bunk bed configuration concealed behind flowing linen curtains, providing both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Ascending to the third floor unveils the pièce de résistance: the primary suite. Bathed in sunlight, this haven boasts a captivating seating area centered around a cozy fireplace, beckoning relaxation and contemplation. A delightful surprise awaits outside, where the hillside location presents a charming plaza accessible via the suite’s secondary entrance. Transitioning from leisure to productivity, a designated “work” space exudes an ambiance reminiscent of an art gallery rather than a conventional home office. Adorned with a remarkable 1950s Audoux Minet desk and a stylish Bent Møller Jepsen chair, the workspace is further elevated by a display of exquisite curvy ceramics, fostering an environment conducive to both creativity and focus.
Since the house was intentionally designed with no quarters for housekeeping, the family comes to live a less encumbered life, cooking for friends and just hanging out. “It really is a party house,” Muñoz says. “[The homeowners tell me] they feel they lead different lives there, more fun lives
