Bjark Ingles is known for is work on the residential building, West 57, in New York City. As expected for the fans of the architect, the building is something spectacular!
This year, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilions was designed as a simple wall that has been distorted into a more freeform shape. Ingles describe his work as “both transparent and opaque, both solid box and blob”.
Viewed side-on, the pavilion is rectangular, when seen from the front or at an angle, its curving silhouette is revealed! The opacity of the building change, depending on the view angle.
“We liked this idea that, quite often, interesting things happen when you change seemingly incompatible elements and you combine them into a new hybrid” said Ingles.
The building is a modern structure reminiscent of an unzipped wall, which houses cafés and family activities by day, and by night, becomes a space for the Gallery’s Park Nights program, which features performances by artists, writers, and musicians. If you’re in London, maybe you should pass by!
