Since Foster + Partners redesign the British Museum’s Great Court has suffered the curse of the London icon: an incomparable venue without a café to match its splendour. Softroom were appointed by the British Museum to renovate and redesign the Great Court restaurant at the British Museum, after the popular restaurant group Benugo took over the Museum’s catering.

The London-based practice was responsible for the creation of the café that occupies the terrace behind the majestic Victorian reading room. From the start, it was clear that the restaurant, which is on the terrace level, could make more of its fantastic location and feel more accessible and inviting to all museum visitors.
EDITOR’S CHOICE:

Ideal for restaurant’s dining areas, Matheny stilnovo came to reinvent classic designs with a high aesthetic feeling. This fixture by DelightFULL has the complex and attractive geometry design of combined tubes. It is both inspiring and elegant with its aluminum body.
They choose a casual bistro seating and communal dining perpendicular to the counter, and on the opposite side, in front of the bar, a more comfortable area defined by high-backed banquette seating, providing a sense of enclosure and intimacy away from the bustle of the main restaurant.
The teal and teak color scheme manages to be fresh and contemporary while also referencing the gem-toned tables and books in the reading room.
