In a world where everyone is having ideas right now, sometimes we worry about people running out of creativity, but then someone comes out and makes sure we are completely wrong. That’s the case here, with this Skyhouse by architect David Hotson. First of all, it has a slide, and whether you want it or not, it pulls your inner child out. The penthouse occupies the top floors of a late 19th century tower in Manhattan and since then, it had never been used as a residence.
Hotson was free to rebuild the whole place resulting in a quadruple-height living room, indoor balconies and the dream two stage slide. And don’t worry, if you’re not in the mood to slide down, there are stairs too.
Now, let’s look at the main characteristic of the apartment, the light. Well, there’s a bittersweet feeling for us.
Everything is bright, even the stainless steel slide can be used as a mirror, and it has a touch of genius borrowing light from the upper level rooms but maybe it is too bright for us, with all the white and the incandescent colors used by interior architect Guislaine Viñas.
Fortunately, it has a lot of details that we really enjoy, when we look at them separately, specially the fact that you have a prototype kind of house inside an old building, very trendy, indeed. We absolutely love the small reading spaces next to small windows and we have to take my hat off because Hotson made the best when it comes to enlightening the place. But as a whole experience, it doesn’t really ring a bell in us. Still, this place won our heart, just by having a slide. Yes, now we want a slide here in our work!
