Think hard about the last time you saw a starry night sky. Can you remember? Probably not. In 2015, we celebrate light as the vital part it plays on our society: in 2015, we celebrate the International Year of Light.
The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative adopted by United Nations and it’s main goal is to highlight to the citizens of the world the importance of light and optical technologies in their lives, for their futures and for the development of society.
The United Nations has recognized the importance of light-based technologies and want to cause awareness to light pollution and it effects on mankind. As this video explains it, it also leaves an appeal to lighting designers: you can stop development…yes, but it has to be sustainable development. People need to be educated in the right ways to use the light as to end the light pollution and give our astronauts and our unborn children a change to see the dark sky at night.
