Since the end of World War II, fashion took quite some time to settle into an accepted form which would stand, eventually, as the historical look of the mid-century. This might have happened because 1950’s fashion was the stage for the introduction of many new styles and some other recycled ones that paid homage to the 1920’s.

In a time when freedom was becoming a widespread notion, so did amidst the fashion industry people saw a chance to be bolder about to their fashion choices, not having to conform to specific looks that were perceived as more appropriate for certain occasions. With the United States becoming more and more of a fashion trendsetter, the Broadway musical My Fair Lady was also major inspiration, focused on the whimsical styles of the pre-war period.

Still, one of the major issues that outlined the 50’s was the waistline. So much so that the phrase “the wandering waistline” was coined at the Paris spring collections in 1952. All types of waistline had their enthusiasts, from high waist to low waist, not forgetting the natural waist and even the “no waist” at all! At the head of these trends were always the same two main designer houses: the French Dior and the Spanish Balenciaga.

Dior’s markedly high waists that had peaked during 1952, melted into a development of the earlier princess dresses, which followed feminine the figure as closely as a swim suit from high neck through the hips, flaring gently.
