TRENDZINE: UP TO ISTANBUL…

Istanbul. One of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, a crossroad of civilizations, Istanbul is a magical place where many cultures meet and coexist. While the majority of the population is Muslim, a mix of cultures and religion backgrounds are fused together in one city – the only one in the world lying on two different countries. A city where one can truly experience Middle Eastern and Western cultures all at once. This diversity inspires the work of every artist in the city, so interior designers couldn’t escape. The 4th Edition of TRENDZINE brings to you a special apartment in this beautiful city. Take a look!

Located in Erenköy, a peaceful neighborhood of Kadıköy, a cosmopolitan district on the Asian side of Istanbul, and named after Chalcedon, the ancient Greek maritime town that thrived on the same location, Khalkedon House is a two-floor, recently refurbished penthouse that combines a modernized, mid-century sense of style with a contemporary sensibility of comfort and elegance.

Designed by Turkish, multi-disciplinary design studio ESCAPEFORMA, the four-bedroom, 250-square meter apartment spreads out on two floors with living spaces and bedrooms on both levels and a spacious terrace on the upper floor offering amazing views of the city. The interiors have a warm, welcoming atmosphere through the use of Iroko hardwood for the floors, perfectly balanced with a toned down palette of whites and grays for walls, carpets, and fabrics.

Designed with a minimalist aesthetic of simple lines and clean surfaces, the rooms are complemented by the use of Italian marble and polished brass for furniture pieces and other details that emanate a subtle luxuriousness without overwhelming the senses.

The apartment’s decor is one of mid-century modernism, exemplified by custom made furniture of polished wood, marble, and brass, together with classic pieces. Other elements that reminisce back to that era are the slatted timber paneling cladding the kitchen and staircase volumes and the custom-design wallpaper on the back of the sitting area depicting tropical foliage and flowers, both rendered in contemporary, somber terms with the former painted a dark grey and featuring bronze slats among the wood, and the later rendered in achromatic tones.

The upper floor, which includes the master bedroom and a second sitting room-cum-playroom, retains the same minimalist, mid-century aesthetic, including a marble clad fireplace flanked by dark, wooden shelving, but has a more airy, playful ambiance due to undulating, faceted ceiling and the bountiful daylight flooding in through the perimeter glazing and skylights.

The living room opens up onto a spacious L-shaped terrace accommodating a comfortable lounge and dining area. With an elegant palette of grays, whites and baby blues, it is the ideal place to sit and enjoy the panoramic views of the city and the Sea of Marmara beyond.
