“The challenge was to redesign the mews house from the inside out without amending the planning application due to time constraints,” studio founder Darragh Breathnach. “This meant we could not modify the exterior proportions or window locations.”

The studio decided to invert the internal layout of the Cratlach Mews House, placing the bedrooms at the ground level and the open-plan kitchen, lounge and dining room on the first floor.

The new arrangement allowed the architects to increase the amount of daylight entering the main living space and make the most of the roofspace. The lounge area is set along an exposed wall made from reclaimed bricks, while the kitchen and dining room are placed on a lower level accessed by a few steps.

EDITOR’S CHOICE:
Nothing better than a Piazzolla wall fixture, from DelightFULL, with a pure 60’s stilnovo design, to complete the contemporary style of this amazing mews house. With 2 aluminum cones, this wall lamp is used in Mad Men’s television series. It has a dynamic and versatile look that can be applied in any setting. Custom made versions done upon request. Its structure is made in brass and the lampshades in aluminum.
“By using subtle level changes we defined different zones within the building without the need to insert additional walls,” explained Breathnach.

Above the kitchen area are placed four skylights, they also feature into this room a run of cabinets made from stainless steel on one side and another of Chilean pine plywood above. Into the wooden bookshelf that runs down one side of the main staircase, they featured a small desk and seat. An opening between the tabletop and bench encourages the owner to dangle his feet over the stairwell while he reads.
