You can tell the rough-chic crime drama of BBC has reached some of the peaks of excellence when stars such as David Bowie and Leonard Cohen provided songs to it. Telling the story of the Birmingham crime family, Peaky Blinders is the one to make head turns – and not only for the beauty of its leading actors!
When it comes to making things happen, the production team is on the spot. Proof of that is the Liverpool Olympia, one the places used in the fourth season. Styled to look like a 1920’s boxing arena, the set is complete with vintage accessories, filled with herbal cigarette smoke and stylish overcoats.
And speaking of overcoats – there’s a Peaky clothing line designed by the no more than the series creator, which is even better! With a pop culture impact not seen since the Mad Men era, Peaky Blinders is spread throughout the whole England territory. The distinctive looks of the early 20th-century tailoring meeting reality are something to live by.
“The whole series is about escape, with a particularly British point of view: Can you escape where you’re born?” claims Knight.
But’s let’s move on to the real talk – the inspiration behind it. The whole obscure show was born, believe it or not, from stories that the creator heard about his father’s uncles which were actual members of the Peaky Blinders gang. The name? It came from the members’ signature flat-caps that became blinders and were weaponized with razor blades sewn into the peaks.
As the legend goes, you don’t need to be big to be magnificent. Guess what? That’s what happened when the show executive producer saw Cillian Murphy. “He was so powerful in the room that it didn’t matter that he was physically not a big guy,” claimed Caryn Mandabach.
