“I am, and ever will be, a white-sock, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer.”
When human skills are surpassed, magic settles, triggering a special atmosphere . That’s what happened on that that hot day of July 20, 1969, when all the eyes were staring at the TV in the day when Neil Armstrong made history. It was “one giant leap for mankind” with a small step onto the moon. Considered by many historians the technology world’s greatest pioneer, he has died at the age of 82.
Neil Armstrong would mark the history, and sixties would never be the same. By commanding the historic landing of the Apollo 11 spacecraft on the moon July 20, 1969, he was the responsible for the most daring of the 20th century’s scientific expeditions, becaming the first man to walk on the moon.
His first words after the feat are etched in history books and the memories of the spellbound millions who heard them in a live broadcast.
The sentence “that’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” as he stepped down from the lunar module and onto the surface, remains one of the most famous ever uttered.
The world has said good bye to this brave astronaut last saturday, when Neil has died due to complications as a result of cardiovascular procedures.
US President Barack Obama led the tributes to Armstrong saying “he delivered a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten.”
“They (the Apollo 11 astronauts) carried with them the aspirations of an entire nation.”
