Inside the Screen- How Girlboss Is Rocking the Vintage World

Inside the Screen: How Girlboss Is Rocking the Vintage World

There is no denying that tv shows and Netflix are already a pretty big part of our daily lives. Everywhere we go, or even everywhere we look, there’s a billboard or a commercial of the latest episode of the trendiest tv show airing at the moment. We, of course, have a few favorites, such as the mid-century-inspiring Mad Men tv series, and many other classics. However, we just couldn’t hide our excitement about one of Netflix’s hottest series right now… Girlboss. Much more than a story about a young and successful entrepreneur in the fashion industry, Girlboss is already shaping and challenging the vintage and industrial design worlds.

Based on true events, the tv series retells the story of how Sophia Amoruso, Nasty Gal’s founder, came to build her own business at the early age of 23, thus creating an empire that is still running in the current days. For those of you who are not familiar with it, Nasty Gal is an online vintage retailing shop that first came to be in 2006, in the early days of eBay, and is now part of the BooHoo Group. Following the huge success of Amoruso’s book, #GIRLBOSS, Netflix picked up this new tv series, loosely retelling the events of the founder back in 2006, going from a normal 23-year-old who hasn’t yet found her purpose in life, to a real-life business owner.

Watching the tv series, and especially if you’re a serious design lover, you have probably noticed how rich and full of vintage and industrial decor elements it is. Being Nasty Gal a vintage retailer, it comes as no surprise that most of the sets, wardrobe and the overall feeling of the show is filled with an inspiring vintage glow.

!Spoilers ahead! Sophia’s apartment, and especially the improvised studio she puts together in her open space flat with a stolen rug and a few rusty nails, are packed with a retro chic vibe that is at the same so casual and random that it just clicks and makes perfect sense for everyone who loves vintage and industrial decor.

More than that, throughout the thirteen episodes there are moments where lighting and color just make all the difference. When you think vintage, or industrial, you don’t think bright and over colorful. No way! That just isn’t the right way to do it. Rather, you think a little bit somber and rougher. So it is very exciting to see the work done by the art director, production designer, and their teams, which are able to bring to life authentic and inspiring industrial settings with great light and the right props.

And, as expected, vintage furniture and vintage fashion are also a big deal throughout the show. We can see inspiring transformations being made to old pieces of clothing when Sophia can just transform them into stylish and vintage-inspired clothing items. The same happens with most of the furniture the production design team chose for their sets. We can see everyday items being brought back to life and putting the whole set design together. This happens mostly in the latest episodes, where you can see !spoilers ahead! Sophia’s warehouse and the classic desk chairs which were chosen for the industrial set.

Of course that, for us, the only thing that is missing from this very stylish and vintage world, is the perfect lighting design.
