Cannes festival 2018 starts today! What an incredible ride, don’t you think? This year comes filled with gossip and interstellar locations along with some of the best movies of the season. Controversial times ask for controversial art. This year’s French festival comes with great opportunities to catch up on some of the best movies around!

So, let’s start about some of the hottest topics of this year’s festival. From Netflix being pulled up from the festival to the further controversy swirls around the Kenyan film that was banned, people had divergent opportunities about everything. And while the jury is mainly women, women directors are at fault.

With all of this in the works, this year Cannes festival promises! Opening with Everybody Knows, starring one of the most endearing couples, actors Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz will be the ones to shine on the red carpet of the event. And while we’re talking about the opening, the closing of the French festival will be with the supposedly cursed movie of Terry Gilliam.  The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, a retelling of the Miguel de Cervantes classic

So, let’s talk movies for real. For more than seven decades, everyone who’s anyone in the film industry has migrated to the French Riviera in May for the Cannes Film Festival. The festival that combines the star-studded red-carpet premieres with long days of screenings, meetings, networking, and parties. And this year is no different. The festival’s 71st instalment runs from May 8 to 19 and counts on with some of the best of the film industry has to offer.

This year counts with some of the best of the book classics. As we mentioned before, the works of Miguel de Cervantes is going to be one of the most expected screenings but we have an eye on other book adaptation that we love. Ramin Bahrani’s adaptation of Fahrenheit 451 is one of the most anticipated movies in this year festival. Starring nonetheless by Michael B. Jordan, this movie promises.

Whitney Houston is also going to make a roaring appearance. Kevin Macdonald directed the movie that depicts de tragic life and the career rollercoaster of one of the muses of music. The official backing of the singers family gave the documentary the push it was needing. With access to previously unreleased recordings, unseen home movie footage and rare live performances if you are a fan, you can’t miss!

Rafiki, which means “friend” in Swahili, traces the love story between two young women. The movie which was banned in its home country has been the buzz of the season.  The movie of the moment for was directed by Wanuri Kahiu and is a short-story adaptation of the Caine Prize-Winning, Jambula Tree, by the Ugandan write Monic Arac Nyeko.

A special appearance by one of the renowned names in the industry, Christopher Nolan is something worthy of mention. Hosting a 70mm screening of Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey This year, with a special section, Christopher Nolan will also be present in  “Rendez-vous with …”  – a series of talks, along with Ryan Coogler – Black Panther and Gary Oldman.

And don’t forget to place your bets on which movie is going to win the coveted award of Palme d’Or. Get your blanket ready, wine in hand and get on the filming list: Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, Jean-Luc Godard’s Le Livre d’Image, and Under the Silver Lake, from It Follows director David Robert Mitchell.
