GET OUT YOUR CALCULATOR
The general rule of thumb is one gallon per 400 square feet, tells Minchew. However, that’s just a rough guideline. If you wish to have a precise number, wich you’ll definitely need if you’re making a large project, just use a painting calculator like the ones provided by Benjamin Moore or Pratt & Lambert. They have in count window and door measurements. If you want the same for smaller projects, like cabinets or furniture pieces, you will need to multiply height times width to get the paintable surface area (take a little extra for table legs too).
TAKE COLOR AND FINISH INTO ACCOUNT
If you want to turn a darker piece into a brighter color, you’ll likely need additional paint (for example). And, in the other way, a deep color base tends to require more coats of product than a lighter color. Carolyn Noble, marketing and design manager at Pratt & Lambert, recommends utilizing a gray tinted primer to the surface before you paint your walls a saturated color to help reduce the number of applications. When we are talking about the finish, the glossier it is, the higher the coverage rate, but it’s not enough to change the number of gallons you need to buy, explains Minchew.
NOT ALL SURFACES ARE CREATED EQUAL
If you’re painting a highly textured surface rather than a smooth one, just buy a little extra- said Julianne Simcox, Pratt & Lambert associate brand manager; Minchew proposes purchasing about 10 percent more than calculated. So, ask some questions at the shop you will buying it, or hardware store before you haul those cans home. “Many consumers, and sometimes even the pros, overlook the obvious step of getting advice”, he said. “Every job has some unique aspects that an experienced associate can help sort out”.
