The Wolf of Wall Street was one of the most watched movies of 2013 and 2014, and although it ended up not taking home any Academy Award, it was nominated for five categories. Retelling the story of Wall Street real life wolf Jordan Belfort, we get to know how he goes from selling penny stocks in a strip mall following the 1987 market crash to the top of his own New York firm, Stratton Oakmont, all the while cultivating an opulent lifestyle filled with houses, cars, and plenty of illicit substances. When reconstructing the 90s feeling we can feel throughout the movie, production designer Bob Shaw explained that architecturally, the 1990s were the height of postmodernism, “there’s a preponderance of strange pyramids and things colored peach and aqua.” However, in the case of Jordan Belfort’s home, the designer wanted to create the feeling of old money, so they went with “a home showing that (…) had a certain English landed-gentry look.”

In the office we see the most throughout the movie, the production design team embraced the teal that was already there and added some glass blocks to make it look more overtly of the period. “The last office attempted to look more dignified, even though obviously they were anything but dignified.”

However, before moving to the new office in the city, Shaw tried to recreate the auto shop turned brokerage into a natural space, that underwent the changes one would expect when improvising a space. “If you look in the background in the first scene, there are racks that still have the equipment, tires, fan belts, and those kinds of things on them. There was even a car up on blocks without its wheels. Slowly that stuff moves out and we filled it up with desks“, explained the designer to AD.
