When capturing the essence that it’s this masterpiece by the Duffer Brothers, the countless inspirations from icons of movies and writers are endless. The 80’s feeling that the TV series brings to this modern world, makes the delight of every generation and of course, you’ll fall in love with the homage to 1980s pop culture.
To make the Stranger Things set real you need to get the correct props or else the feeling isn’t just the same right? The queen of prop decor of this blockbuster series, Lynda Reiss scoured eBay, flea markets, prop rentals and estate sales in Georgia. The budget was around $220,000. Even though it isn’t pocket change nowadays TV needs to be on the movie level so, a little bit of creativity was needed.
“TV is now movie-quality,” Reiss says. “That’s what people want, and that’s what you have to deliver.”
When talking about what the 1980’s were all about the prop artist didn’t beat around the bush. “I don’t want to do a nostalgia-tinged product,” Reiss says. “I want it to be the ’80s. I don’t want it to be what everyone just thinks is the ’80s. Our baseline was the reality of the Midwest in 1983.”
One of the most iconic props of the whole show was music. Music to save, music to connect, music to have fun. So, of course, we had to talk about Jonathan’s Stereo. The iconic piece of music item is a Fisher MC-4550 from 1981. If you remember correctly, everything in the Buyer’s house – Spoiler Alert! – needed to flicker from time to time, so “we rigged the stereos to go on and off at our command,” Reiss says.
When talking about Stranger Things we can help but talk a bit of the game that still lives in the hearts and great minds of the viewers: Dungeons and Dragons. The game that captured our minds has a strong presence in the show and some of the props are a really lovely such as the Demogorgon figurine, legit and made of lead.
